Our hair needs intensive cleansing from time to time. Do you apply conditioners, oils, masks, styling products every day? Believe it or not, your hair also needs detox and thorough cleansing.
Hair care isn’t as easy as it seems. You may easily go to extremes. Hair loses shine if you don’t deliver enough nutrients but it gets hurt if you provide too much of them. How to care for hair then? Doing a scalp detox on a regular basis may be the perfect solution.
Why does your hair need detox?
Scalp needs detox once in a while. This is essential because dust, dirt and styling products build up on the hair and worsen its condition. Regular cleansing makes hair absorb ingredients from conditioning products more easily. Hair is also shinier, softer and easier to style.
Even low-porosity, silky-smooth hair may get worse due to wrongly-suited products or overusing them, particularly if they are hard to wash out (e.g. include silicones).
How to detoxify hair and scalp?
Above all else, do it regularly. If you only use mild SLS-free shampoos, you don’t wash the hair thoroughly enough. Products build up creating a layer which is really harmful. Only a strongly-clarifying shampoo or scrub will leave your strands and scalp perfectly clean. How to fix that? There are some home remedies and in-salon treatments you can try.
Hair needs clarifying at least once a week. SLS shampoos are notorious and they are strong detergents indeed. However, they cause extreme dryness only if you use them in excess. Hair needs them from time time so don’t give them up totally.
Regular cleansing is as important as daily care. Without thorough, systematic scalp detox, you cause a lot of harm: dandruff, irritations or even hair loss are common. Toxic substances, dirt, oil accumulate so you need a strong shampoo, baking soda or scalp scrub to get rid of them.
What to use for cleansing the scalp and hair?
You need the right products:
- clarifying shampoo – make sure it includes SLS or SLES. These strongly-cleansing substances do harm if you use them daily but they just clear the scalp of any dirt if you use them once a week;
- scalp scrub – choose between a scrub containing acids or abrasives. With regular exfoliation you can clear the scalp of all impurities. You can do the scrub yourself or get a treatment at the salon;
- hard soap – it’s been slightly forgotten but it’s my personal favorite. It has a cleansing effect and adds shine. Apply it on the scalp after shampooing and rinse after two minutes.
Hair oil treatment after hair and scalp detox
Thorough cleansing of hair and scalp deprives them of the natural hydro-lipid mantle which protects against the external aggressors. After using a scrub or clarifying shampoo, apply a hair oil to revitalize and smoothen the hair, and rebuild the protective shield.
